At dawn I drove to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley. As the sunrise crested over the mountains the dunes became alive with its changing light and shadows As I hiked along the dunes towards the 100-foot high peaks the sun continues to highlight the ridge edges, shadows, and patterns in the sand. I know I have limited time before the colors and shadows will be bleached out by the rising sun. Looking down along a ridgeline I see a set of footprints made by an earlier hiker.
