24 x 20" / acrylic on stretched canvasIn general I am drawn to painting botanical subjects but the Poppy has to be my all-time favorite, and I return to it again and again. In all stages of its life, a poppy is weirdly beautiful. From its fuzzy alien-looking buds to its crepey, dramatic petals, to its hand carved looking seed pods, the poppy has so much appeal to me, that I never seem to stop being facinated by it. My mother has always grown these enormous Oriental Poppies in her yard and a number of years ago she helped me transplant some of them in my own garden. For the first few years a few struggling blooms would appear periodically, but this year (7 years later) the patch of poppies we planted together exploded in this brilliant display.
