24x20" / acrylic on stretched canvas / I am drawn to painting botanical subjects, but the poppy has to be my all-time favorites, and I return to it again and again. In all stages of its life, a poppy is weirdly beautiful. From its fuzzy alien-looking buds to its crepey, dramatic petals, to its hand carved looking seed pods, the poppy has so much appeal. A number of years ago my mother helped me transplant some of her gigantic poppies in my own garden. For the first few years, a few struggling blooms would appear periodically, but seven years later, the poppies we planted together exploded in this brilliant display.
