Lava Flows: Old and New
Once a lava flow solidifies and is exposed to the air to "weathers" and changes color. Old flows are lighter in color than younger flows. From the air, it is easy to see the youngest flows. Note the active volcano in the center and the huge crevasse created as the lava cooled.
