15.5 x 19.5" / oil on canvas / This girl has a mind of her own. I was inspired by a spectacular photo a friend sent of the sun coming through forest branches covered in frost. It was so luminous, with fractured colors like a kaleidoscope. So I started by building up layers of the colors that would come through the sunlight and snow. When I got to the final layer of white, it completely took over the painting, and I could not save the bursts of color as I had intended. So I started building the colors back up, in reverse, and very meticulously added the white so as not to obliterate the other hues. I'm not sure I've ever painted a canvas with more layers of paint, but in the end, I achieved that brilliant, sparkling effect I was hoping for.
