Wendy Constantine

Wendy Constantine's work focuses on the fragility of memory. Wendy’s pieces are heavily influenced by the hand-altered aesthetics of Pictorialism and the poetic imagery of Josef Sudek. She persistently experiments with 19th century photographic processes enhanced by modern technology. Her first love and travel companion is her Rolleiflex, and her primary mediums are photogravure, salted paper, gum bichromate and carbon transfer.

Her passion for the history of photography and printmaking grew out of a bachelor degree in studio arts from UCLA, followed by a masters in museum studies at Harvard. She has a background in graphic design, and today she is an experience design director for a major educational publisher. Her artwork has been frequently published and exhibited in galleries across the United States. Originally from the Bay Area, her studio today is based in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado.

As a photographer and printmaker, Wendy composes natural and urban still lifes that reveal often overlooked or hidden aspects of both public and private spaces. Inspired by the reflective windows and storefronts of Eugene Atget, and the introspective studio views of Josef Sudek, Wendy’s work embodies the subtlety of feminine strength, grit, and determination.

Wendy enjoys the discovery of “found still lifes” that hide in plain sight. First captured on film through a medium format lens and then digitized, she then interpret the imagery through various methods that rely on handmade, UV sensitive historic processes including salted paper, gum bichromate, cyanotype, and the modern, less toxic, polymer photogravure.tags:solo, current
